Renaissance Inklings

The influence of the European—and specifically the English—Middle Ages on Inklings JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, and Charles Williams has been widely discussed. Less frequently noted is the influence of writers of the Early Modern period. This lacuna prompts many questions. In what ways might Milton's Paradise Lost be seen as an influence on Tolkien's creation myth recounted in The Silmarillion? How might Spenser's The Faerie Queene have influenced Williams's or Lewis's fiction? This session invites papers that explore relationships like these, and similar lines of inquiry.
